Jewish Foundation Healthcare Scholarship Program
In what is described as the largest scholarship program in its history, in May of 2012 Yavapai College announced the Jewish Community Foundation (JCF) would provide 96 full tuition and fee scholarships over the ensuing five years to students in the nursing and radiologic technology programs. The first recipients of the Jewish Foundation Healthcare Scholarships began their professional studies at Yavapai College in the Fall semester of 2012 and graduated in May of 2014.
The scholarship program was designed to address two issues: (1) the expected shortage of healthcare professionals in coming years and (2) the inability of rural communities to effectively compete with urban communities for these highly valued professionals. The Jewish Foundation Healthcare Scholarship program was designed as a community effort to identify, support, and train students who are committed to pursuing a healthcare career in our local community. As described by JCF president, David Hess, M.D.: “The program simultaneously supports education and healthcare, while ensuring a ‘pipeline’ of vital healthcare professionals for the local medical community.”
Dr. Penny Wills, president of Yavapai College, stated: “This forward-looking gift from the Jewish Community Foundation comes at a time when college affordability and financial resources are significant barriers for many students and their families, especially when the family may have limited funds to help defray the costs of a college education. In providing scholarship support for healthcare students at Yavapai College, JCF has shown a commitment to working in partnership with local organizations to ensure that the highest quality healthcare workforce is available in our community for future generations.”
With community support from Yavapai Regional Medical Center and the Margaret T. Morris Foundation the program has expanded to provide more than 114 scholarships over the past five years.
